Ralph Roybal is an Albuquerque artist who devotes his talents to creating bronze sculptures of the American West. He worked in the Santa Fe Foundry and the Dell Weston Studio Foundry. Work at foundries gradually led to a full-time sculpture career in 1985. Twelve years of apprenticeship enriched and enabled this sculptor to create some of the finest bronze sculpture in the Southwest. His work is marked by his use of many rich polychrome patinas. This is the hallmark of his work and started when very few were aware of its beauty.

His studio allows him to create and complete all but the casting. He insists on doing the final detailing and applying the finish patinas. Each bronze is signed, numbered and marked with his copyright.

This bronze sculpture depicts an event when the U. S. Government was tracking down the Apache warriors and they retreated to the mountains to escape capture. It's an excellent casting and the features of the clothing of the warrior are beautifully rendered. The face of the Indian is beautifully portrayed.

The bronze is titled at the base, numbered 11/30 and dated 1989. It is in original excellent condition.

Provenance: ex. coll. Frances Sonnenberg, Santa Fe resident
