Once Known Native American Carver

Zuni dolls are not necessarily carved from cottonwood root, as are the Hopi dolls. Most often they are carved from pine. This carving appears to be from pine, perhaps even from a pine two-by-four. The full body was carved from a single piece, and the arms, nose and horns were added. As in most Zuni dolls, the arms articulate.

An interesting aspect employed by the carver was to fashion the eyes from fabric and tie them in place with string. The hair appears to be horsehair. The leather moccasins are hand made in fine detail and slipped onto the feet.

As in most Zuni kachina dolls, the clothing was all hand made and hand painted. There are two layers of skirts and two sashes—one painted fabric and one woven of yarn. This is a rare and excellent doll.
