Most collectors of Native art know this artist, but few people know by what name to call him. Most people use Jimmy Toddy, his English name, but he has been known also by Beatien Yazz, Beatian Yazz, Beatian Yazzia, Beatin Yazz, B. Yazz, and Bea Etin Yazz. Beatien Yazz has become more acceptable.
Yazz, born around 1928, achieved fame early in life through illustrations published in Alberta Hannum's books, Spin A Silver Dollar, in 1944, and Paint The Wind, in 1958. As a result, his paintings have been very much in demand.
Most of his work reflects the everyday lives of the Navajo. His features may be realistic or semi- realistic. His colors are strong and contrasting but seldom muted; and rich combinations of color are typical.
This painting reflects realism in the presentation of the deer, but shows Yazz's artistic freedom in the mauve color he chose.
This painting was framed without the addition of matting. It is recommended that the purchaser have it matted and framed properly as a means of long-term protection of the art.
