Stephen [Qued Koi] Mopope (1898-1974) was born and raised on the Kiowa Reservation, Indian Territory, which later became Oklahoma. For the majority of his life, he was a painter and dancer. Mopope’s childhood education by his grandmother was in the Kiowa tradition. Additionally, he studied with Susie Peters of the Kiowa Agency in Anadarko, Oklahoma, and at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, in the late 1920s. He is one of the original Oklahoma artists known as the “Kiowa Five.”

This piece is rich and glorious with amazing color usage. Mopope’s detailing is wonderful and the use of silver metallic paint in some of the details adds depth to the work. The warrior’s face is filled with determination and pride, lending itself to extreme drama.

Condition: The piece is in very good condition. There is a very small amount of flaking of the red paint on the face of the Indian; however, it is not viewable without a magnification glass. The painting has not been examined out of the frame, but the entire painting was examined under magnification and everything else looks to be in original excellent condition. It is nicely framed and matted in a gilded frame and it is signed “Mopope ‘30” in the lower right.

Provenance: ex. coll. California Native American painting collector.
