This is an outstanding small Hopi Katsina doll, most probably from the 1930s. The paint appears to be tempera or casein. I have not yet identified which Katsinam it is. According to Chad Burkhardt, there are a number of Katsinam that seem to have appeared in the ‘20s, ‘30s and ‘40s that apparently have lost their identity. He believes this may be one of them.
The doll exhibits features of older dolls, such as short legs, long skirt, and large head. It does not appear that there has ever been any breakage and repair. Everything looks to be in original condition. The feathers have been replaced in accordance with Federal Regulations.
