Belen Tapia was Sara Fina’s niece and Margaret Tafoya’s first cousin. She has been recognized as one of the outstanding potters at Santa Clara Pueblo. She was best known for her beautifully painted polychrome pottery, but she was equally adept at making exquisite blackware pottery.
This tall-neck jar is clear evidence of her capability in blackware. The jar was beautifully formed and meticulously carved, then finished with an exquisite burnish. The deep black coloration is the result of a perfect firing.
The jar is in remarkable condition. There are a few scratches but they are not threatening to the visual impact the jar makes.
