Nampeyo of Hano, Hopi-Tewa Potter and Matriarch

The design on this canteen is an early one used by Nampeyo. Dextra Nampeyo has described it as a spider design. It is a design that has not been copied by other potters, probably in respect to Nampeyo. It is one of the boldest and most striking designs used by her. It most likely dates to circa 1905.

The diminutive size of this canteen, and its early design composition, point to its commercial origin as early tourist ware. As remains true to today, early pottery items by Nampeyo are intriguing to collectors, and vessels made by her were eagerly sought curios sold by the Fred Harvey Company. They were most popular at its Indian shop, Hopi House, at the Grand Canyon.

Condition: The canteen is in remarkable condition. There is evidence of long-time wear from string or rope on the handles, but no damage or repair to the item.

Provenance: Sold to previous owner by Marti Struever, Santa Fe dealer, as an item by Nampeyo and design identified by Dextra Nampeyo.
