As evening settles over Isleta Pueblo, a couple returns to their home, probably to build a fire for warmth and to settle in for dinner and an evening together. Their home is typical of pueblo buildings in that a section was built as the first unit, and then rooms were added as the family increased in size. This house seems to have had three additions. That is the charm of old adobe buildings.
The stepladders leaning against the house are a carry-back to the days when entrance to a house was through the roof—a method of security to keep marauding tribes from entering. At that time, there were no doors leading into the houses from the outside. Many adobe homes still leave ladders leaning against houses, probably as a reminder of the old days.
This painting was executed in 1991 and is in original excellent condition. It is signed in lower left.
