This Hopi serving bowl features predominately designs associated with Zuni Pueblo pottery. This is not unusual. What is generally considered to be Zuni Pueblo designs were quite prevalent on (Hopi) Polacca vessels. Polacca pottery style at Hopi began around 1740. It did not fully become the predominant type there until about 1800, and it continued until about 1890. Polacca wares were the predominant utilitarian wares of this time period. This bowl is typical of designs on Polacca Polychrome, Style C, which existed in the late-1800s; however, it is of a later date.

The designs on the exterior of this bowl are a good example of Zuni designs. The interior of the bowl features two large volute elements that are very typical of Zuni volutes. A red underbody and a black rim complete the decoration.

The interior and exterior of the bowl have been wiped over with a rich warm orange colored thin slip that almost obliterates the design and yet enhances the beauty of the bowl.
