Zia Polychrome typology has been established at between the periods 1860 to 1930. It followed the period known as Trios Polychrome and although the transition was gradual, there are distinctive differences between the two typologies. Zia Polychrome jars abandoned the rounded shape of Trios Polychrome and became more sharply rising. The shoulder of the jars departed from the middle of the vessel to a higher level. Additionally, the polished red underbody of Zia Polychrome jars is redder than the tan-colored underbody of the Trios periods. (Harlow and Lanmon).

This jar most probably dates to the first quarter of the 20th century—most likely in the 1910 decade. The vessel shape and the boldness of the designs are typical of that era. This jar has a slightly rolled-out rim below which is a unique neck design executed in polychrome whereas the body design is entirely brown over cream, without the addition of orange. The boldness of the design and the beautiful vessel shape are the reason for this being such a handsome jar. It is one of the finest small jars we have seen.

Condition: There has been some professional conservation to the jar. There were a couple cracks on the body that have been corrected and some over-painting of the areas of the cracks. The jar is now stable and visually stunning.
