Michael Adams of Aurora Studios is considered the master artisan today in the fabrication of Dirk Van Erp-style hammered copper lamps with mica shades. The copper bases and the copper trim of the shades are intricately hand hammered, as was the custom in the early-1900s when Van Erp was making similar lamps. The arms supporting the shade are attached to the base with copper rivets. The support brackets on the shade are also riveted to the shade framing pieces with copper rivets.

This lamp features a globular base with a slight rim on the underside. The base is beautifully hand hammered and patinated. It was made in 2001 and is in original condition. It is stamped with the Michael Adams Aurora Studios logo and has Aurora Studios Number 8 and 22 February 2001 inscribed on the underside (click on the second detail image link above to view this and another picture of the lamp turned off).

Note: I spoke with Michael Adams on December 19, 2006 and had a wonderful conversation with him. I found out, unfortunately, that he has scaled down his operation and no longer produces the copper and mica lamps. He is concentrating on architectural type commissions. I can’t blame him for slowing down somewhat, but it is sad to know that there will be no more Michael Adams copper and mica lamps. For anyone interested in his lamps, now is the time to get one. They will only get scarcer as time passes.
